Why won't my breaker reset after tripping?

A breaker that won't reset is usually telling you something important — either the fault that caused it to trip is still present, or the breaker itself has failed.

When a circuit breaker trips, it moves to a middle "fault" position between ON and OFF. Before it will reset, you need to push it fully to OFF first, then back to ON. Many homeowners skip this step and wonder why it won't click back on.
