What is a tandem breaker?

Question

What is a tandem breaker?

Answer from Electric IQ

A tandem breaker (also called a "twin" or "piggyback" breaker) is a special circuit breaker that fits two separate circuits into a single breaker slot in your electrical panel. Instead of one breaker controlling one circuit, a tandem has two side-by-side breakers in the same space — allowing you to squeeze more circuits into a full panel without replacing it.

Tandem breakers look like a standard single-pole breaker in terms of physical width, but they have two separate switches and two separate circuit connections. Each half controls its own circuit independently, so tripping one side doesn't affect the other. They're typically available in 15A and 20A configurations, and are a legitimate, code-compliant solution — when used correctly.

The key limitation is panel compatibility. Not every panel accepts tandem breakers, and those that do only allow them in specific slots. Your panel's directory or the inside of the panel door will often show a diagram indicating which slots are "tandem-approved." Using a tandem breaker in a non-approved slot is an Ontario Electrical Safety Code violation and can cause overheating or breaker failure. This is why you should never just buy a tandem and install it yourself — a licensed electrician needs to verify your panel's specifications and the manufacturer's approved breaker list.

When are tandem breakers useful in Ottawa homes? They're a practical solution when your panel is full but you need one or two additional circuits — for a new appliance, an EV charger on a smaller panel, or a basement renovation. Rather than a full panel upgrade, a licensed electrician may be able to free up capacity using tandems in approved slots. That said, if your panel is consistently full, it's often a sign your home's electrical system has outgrown its capacity, and a 200A panel upgrade may be the better long-term investment.

One important caution: tandem breakers are not compatible with panels that are already known problems — like Federal Pacific or Zinsco panels. If you have one of those, the right answer is full panel replacement, not adding breakers of any kind.

If your panel is full and you're wondering whether tandems are an option for your specific situation, an electrician can assess your panel make and model, check the approved breaker schedule, and advise whether tandems or a panel upgrade makes more sense.
