Probably don't need a permit: - Cosmetic updates (paint, flooring) - Replacing fixtures in existing locations - Minor repairs

When in doubt, check with the city. Getting caught without a permit is expensive.

Key Building Code Points

Ceiling height: Minimum 1.95m (6'5") for basement living spaces

Egress windows: Required for every bedroom - must be big enough to escape through

Fire separation: If creating an apartment, you need 45-minute fire-rated separation

Electrical: Must meet current code, even if existing wiring is older

Smoke/CO alarms: Required and must be interconnected in apartments
